Picture this. Your dentist serving drinks at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Most of you will assume that this was during some “child of the flower” phase. Negative. This was a side gig that she decided to partake in while practicing, just so that she could get a chance to see Prince play one of his famous “secret” late night shows. When Dr. Sarah Hubert was asked if she ever did get to see the rockstar perform her answer was “Yes, and it was awesome!” Whats interesting is that this is just one of many of Dr. Hubert’s zany stories. Her life is filled with them as she takes every chance she can get to go on an adventure or just be in the present moment. “A long time ago I decided that I was going to live my life to the fullest every day. I haven’t gone back on that decision since.”

Dr. Hubert is as laid back as they come.  Born a California chick but a New Yorker at heart,  she grew up along the central coast of California. Although she has an easy going attitude, Dr. Hubert clarifies that when she has a strong feeling about something, she is all in. While in California, she made a one-off decision - “On a whim I flew across the country for only 24 hours just to have dinner with a guy I liked. He was a musician living in New York City. Now we are married and have a son together.” She and her husband Andy, and son Arlo live in the borough of Brooklyn. While she has many fond memories of California, she considers New York to be her true home. “I love all the action and energy. I appreciate the culture, and the diversity. And honestly, I feel like New Yorkers are more friendly than any community that I have been a part of. In fact, the block that I live on reminds me of the one on Sesame Street!”

There are many aspects of dentistry that excite Dr. Hubert. For one, she enjoys working with her hands, creating things. Whether that’s growing food, making furniture, ceramic bowls or knitting blankets. In addition, she also has a fierce passion for physical and mental health, appreciating every individual that she comes into contact with. Lastly, she is interested in many forms of art, be that photography, pottery, music and so on. “I love thinking of dentistry as a melding of art, architecture, design, healing and problem solving. I get to work alongside with great individuals while using my creative side. It’s the perfect profession and I think it’s great that I get to do this every day."

Dr. Hubert takes pride in practicing holistic dentistry - her niche however is in Cosmetic and Rehabilitative Dentistry as well as Airway Focused Orthodontics. “I think it’s very important to look at an individual on an entire scale rather than just tooth by tooth. The body is a highly developed inter-connected system. Things get missed when you fail to appreciate your patients from a broader, yet intricate perspective. I absolutely enjoy taking the time to get to know about each one of my patients - not just their health, but also their personal lives and what inspires them.” Practicing in such a progressive way has changed how she views dentistry, as she feels confident that she is doing what is best for her patients. Dr. Hubert is continually learning and seeking ways to perfect her craft.  She explains “Just as I am passionate about living in the moment, I am very much into solving puzzles and making things beautiful. I love digging in deep, taking the root of a problem and then working backwards to figure out an amazing solution. Sometimes I’ll go mad with obsession because I really find my line of work to be enthralling on so many levels.”

In this world, it is all too common to hear of people yearning for more in life, waiting for something or someone to arrive and save them from some made up story. The funny thing is that all that we need is already present in and around us. You just have to make the choice to acknowledge what it is that you want and get after it. Dr. Hubert has learned to find joy at every turn and corner, never stopping. “I love the smell of new tennis balls, old books and fresh cut wood. I love the sound of my foot steps on gravel as well as the sound of water moving over rocks. I can run and run run and never get tired - I’ve run several triathlons and 3 marathons…I plan on running another for my 50th birthday” When pushed for another story, she laughingly indulged “I once drove 6 and a half hours to sit on a granite slab in the middle of a river in Yosemite because it is one of my happy places…I also moved to Tahoe after college to spend a winter on the mountain. I snowboarded over 70 days that year…” She also shared the birth story of her son “When I gave birth to my son I went into surgery for a C-section (after 36 hours of labor). I started cracking jokes with the  nurses and doctors. Of course I was hopped up on pain meds and who knows what else, but one of the members of the OR team said to Andy ’she must be a joy to live with’…and I think that says a lot. I’m not always a joy - I can be a real pain in the ass, but I don’t flip out easily. I’m a solid person to lean on. I can make you laugh. I’m not easily bothered. As they say ‘I’m just not available for that.’”
