Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a teeth straightening system utilizing clear, medical grade, BPA free plastic trays, to adjust the position of teeth over time. The aligner trays are custom made to fit the shape of the patient’s teeth using an invisible, smooth plastic that allows for comfort and discretion. This system can correct issues of misaligned, crooked, and overcrowded teeth.

What happens during Invisalign® treatment?

Treatment begins with a digital scan of your teeth, which are sent to a lab where the aligners will be created. Each aligner is created based on images developed using three-dimensional modeling software for a custom fit. Between 18 and 30 aligners will be created for most patients. During treatment, each aligner is worn for about two weeks, then exchanged for the next aligner in the series.

Does Invisalign® work the same way as traditional metal braces?

Invisalign® is designed to straighten and properly align teeth just like metal braces. However, instead of relying on metal bands or ceramic plates and wires that are attached to the tooth surfaces, the Invisalign® system uses a series of clear removable trays, similar to the trays used in teeth whitening procedures, to help move teeth into their proper positions over time.

What benefits does Invisalign® offer compare to other types of braces?

Invisalign® is made of clear, medical-grade plastic, so the aligners are very difficult to see while they're being worn. The aligners are smooth, so they don't irritate lips and other soft tissues, and they can be removed for cleaning, making it much easier to brush and floss for better oral health during treatment. Plus, they can be removed for eating, so there are no dietary restrictions. Finally, because each aligner is custom-made for the individual patient, Invisalign® may bring teeth into alignment faster than traditional braces.

Does insurance cover Invisalign®?

Some insurance plans provide at least partial coverage for Invisalign®, but other dental plans do not. When insurance doesn't cover the costs, there are financing plans available to help make the cost of treatment more affordable.

Can I make my treatment time shorter?

If certain conditions in your oral and overall health are met, you can qualify to undergo “Propel.” Propel is a convenient treatment option that will allow you to expedite your Invisalign case. Generally, Propel is a one time procedure that enables your teeth to move at a much faster rate than they would otherwise be able to. With Propel, each Invisalign tray is worn for approximately 40-60% fewer days, allowing you to finish your Invisalign treatment much sooner than what would otherwise be possible.

What else should I be aware of?

Invisalign treatment will usually require “attachments”, or tooth colored bumps, on certain teeth. These attachments will allow the trays to move the teeth more effectively and are usually placed during your first Invisalign appointment. Additionally, some teeth may require smoothing in the area where they touch adjacent teeth. This will allow the teeth to more efficiently move without being constricted by their neighbors. Finally, Dr. Hubert will see you approximately once a month (virtual and in-person) during your treatment to make sure your teeth are moving appropriately. Once your treatment is complete you will require retainers. Retainers work and look much like Invisalign trays except they function to only keep the teeth in their current position and are made with a stronger, longer lasting material.
